Il genere Trypanosoma comprende numerose specie parassite dei vertebrati, causa della tripanosomiasi. La trasmissione del protozoo avviene tramite invertebrati ematofaghi. Parassiti dell'uomo sono Trypanosoma gambiense e trypanosoma cruzi.
